Life Through the Spirit
The Story
Paul opens with one of the most sweeping declarations in all of Scripture: "So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus." The reason is immediate — because of union with Christ, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed believers from the power of sin that leads to death. The law of Moses was unable to accomplish this because of the weakness of human sinful nature, so God did what the law could not do — He sent His own Son in a body like ours, and in that body declared an end to sin's control by giving His Son as a sacrifice, so that the law's just requirement would be fully satisfied. Paul then draws a sharp dividing line between two ways of living: those dominated by the sinful nature have their minds set on sinful things, and that path leads only to death — but those controlled by the Holy Spirit have their minds set on things that please the Spirit, and that path leads to life and peace. The sinful nature is described as being permanently and irreparably hostile to God — it never has obeyed and never will — but believers are not controlled by the sinful nature because the Spirit of God lives in them, and if the Spirit of Christ does not live in a person, that person does not belong to Him at all. The Spirit is not a spirit of fearful slavery but of adoption, and by that Spirit believers cry out to God as Father, while the Spirit Himself joins with their spirit to confirm that they are God's children. The passage closes with the full weight of what that adoption means: "And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God's glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering."
The Message
The answer to the cry at the end of chapter 7 — "Who will free me?" — is answered in the very first verse of chapter 8: there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. What the law demanded but could not produce, God accomplished through His Son, and what His Son secured, the Spirit now applies — freeing believers from sin's power, setting their minds on life and peace, and establishing their identity not as slaves but as children and heirs of God. The path into this life is not effort but belonging — belonging to Christ, and having His Spirit within.
