Life in the Spirit

The Story

Paul opens this passage with one of the most liberating declarations in all of Scripture — that there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. He explains that the law of the Spirit of life in Christ has set believers free from the law of sin and death, something the old written law was powerless to accomplish on its own. God dealt with sin decisively by sending his own Son in human form as a sacrifice, so that the righteous requirements of the law could be fully met in those who follow the Spirit rather than the flesh. Paul draws a sharp contrast between two ways of living — those who are dominated by the sinful nature have their minds fixed on sinful things, while those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit have their minds fixed on what the Spirit desires. He is clear that a mind governed by the flesh leads to death, but a mind governed by the Spirit leads to life and peace. Paul reminds his readers that the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead now lives in them, and that this Spirit gives life even to their mortal bodies. He closes with a sober warning that those who live according to the flesh will die, but those who by the Spirit put to death the deeds of the flesh will live.

The Message

Because of what Christ has done, believers are no longer under condemnation — but they are called to live in step with the Spirit rather than the flesh. The Christian life is not simply about avoiding sin through willpower, but about having a mind and heart genuinely reoriented toward the things of the Spirit. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is available to believers for the living of everyday life.
