Parable of the Prodigal Son – The Father's Welcome and Full Restoration

The Story

Jesus told the story of a father with two sons, where the younger son boldly demanded his share of the family inheritance early and then left home to squander it all on wild and reckless living in a distant land. When a severe famine struck and he found himself starving and feeding pigs — the lowest possible work for a Jewish person — he finally came to his senses and decided to return home, planning to beg his father to take him back as a hired servant rather than a son. But while he was still a long way off, his father spotted him, ran to him with open arms, and embraced and kissed him before the son could even finish his rehearsed apology. The father immediately called for a celebration, dressing his son in the finest robe and throwing a great feast, declaring that his son who was dead was now alive again, and who was lost had now been found. The older son, however, was angry and refused to join the party, feeling that his years of faithful obedience had gone unnoticed and unrewarded. The father tenderly went out to him as well, reminding him that everything he had was already his, but that it was right to celebrate because his brother had come home.

The Message

No matter how far we have strayed or how deeply we have sinned, God the Father is always watching and waiting — ready to run toward us the moment we turn back to Him, restoring us fully as His beloved children rather than treating us as unworthy servants. This parable also gently warns us against the pride of the older son, reminding us that a heart full of religious duty but lacking joy over a restored sinner has missed the very heart of God.
