The Thief on the Cross – Saved by Faith in the Final Moment

The Story

As Jesus hung dying on the cross, two criminals were crucified alongside Him — one on His right and one on His left. The first criminal mocked Jesus bitterly, hurling insults and demanding that if He truly was the Messiah, He should save Himself and them as well. But the second criminal rebuked his companion, acknowledging that the two of them were receiving a just punishment for their crimes while Jesus had done absolutely nothing wrong. In a remarkable act of faith, this dying man then turned to Jesus and humbly asked to be remembered when Jesus came into His Kingdom — expressing belief that Jesus was indeed a King with a Kingdom to offer, even while watching Him suffer and die on a cross. Jesus responded with one of the most tender and immediate promises in all of Scripture, telling him that today — not someday, not eventually — he would be with Him in Paradise. This man had no time left for good works, baptism, church attendance, or religious service — his only act was a simple, desperate, heartfelt faith expressed in his final moments.

The Message

Salvation is never about what we have done or how long we have served — it is entirely about placing our faith and trust in Jesus Christ, and this story proves that it is never too late to do so. The thief on the cross stands as one of the most powerful testimonies in Scripture that God's grace reaches anyone, anywhere, at any moment, as long as there is a sincere and believing heart.
