The Cost of Discipleship

The Story

Jesus gathered his disciples and spoke plainly to them about what it truly means to follow him. He made clear that this was not a call limited to the twelve, but open to anyone willing to meet its demands. "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me." He then pressed them with a searching question about the nature of self-preservation — that whoever clings to their own life will ultimately lose it, but whoever surrenders their life for his sake will save it. He challenged them to consider what could possibly be gained by winning the whole world if it costs a person their very soul. Jesus warned that he would be ashamed of anyone who was ashamed of him and his words before the people of that generation. He closed with a solemn and mysterious promise that some standing there would not die before they saw the kingdom of God arrive in power.

The Message

Following Jesus is not a passive decision — it is a daily surrender of self-will in favor of his lordship. The call to take up the cross means accepting whatever cost comes with faithful obedience. Jesus is clear that no earthly gain is worth the loss of one's soul.
