Matthew · New Testament · Matthew 19:16–22

The Rich Young Ruler

The Story

A young man approached Jesus with an earnest question about what good deed he must do to receive eternal life. Jesus redirected him, saying, "Why ask me about what is good? There is only One who is good. But to answer your question — if you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments." When the young man pressed him on which ones, Jesus listed several of the commandments concerning how to treat others, and the man confidently declared that he had kept all of them since childhood and asked what he still lacked. Jesus looked at him and answered, "If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." The young man was not prepared for that answer. He walked away sad, because he had many possessions and was unwilling to give them up. The encounter ended not with an argument or a pursuit, but with a quiet and sorrowful departure.

The Message

The rich young ruler was morally upright and sincere, yet something still stood between him and fully following Jesus — and Jesus put his finger on it immediately. Eternal life is not earned through religious performance, but it does require a wholehearted surrender that holds nothing back. Whatever we are unwilling to release may be the very thing keeping us from truly following him.
