Jesus Walks on Water

The Story

That evening, after Jesus had slipped away into the hills to escape the crowd that wanted to make Him king, His disciples went down to the shore to wait for Him. When darkness fell and Jesus still had not come, they got into the boat and set out across the lake toward Capernaum. A violent gale swept down upon them as they rowed, and the sea grew very rough. After they had rowed three or four miles into the darkness and the storm, they suddenly saw Jesus walking on the water, moving toward the boat — and they were terrified. Jesus called out to them: "Don't be afraid. I am here!" Then they were eager to take Him into the boat, and immediately — the moment He came aboard — they arrived at their destination on the other shore.

The Message

The disciples were in the middle of a storm, in the dark, far from shore, and Jesus came to them by walking across the very water that threatened them — demonstrating authority not only over distance but over the forces of nature itself. His words to them were not an explanation but a declaration: "I am here," which in the original Greek carries the weight of the divine name — the same "I AM" spoken to Moses at the burning bush. The passage is brief but the miracle is complete: fear gave way to eagerness, the storm is not mentioned again, and they arrived instantly at the place they were trying to reach.
