Zacchaeus the Tax Collector – Salvation Comes to His House Today

The Story

As Jesus passed through the city of Jericho, a wealthy and powerful chief tax collector named Zacchaeus desperately wanted to catch a glimpse of Him, but being short in stature he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree along the road just to get a look at Jesus as He passed by. When Jesus reached the spot, He stopped, looked up into the tree, and called Zacchaeus by name — telling him to come down immediately because He intended to stay at his house that very day. Zacchaeus scrambled down and welcomed Jesus with great joy, while the crowd around them muttered in disapproval, saying that Jesus had gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner. But something powerful happened in Zacchaeus that day — standing before Jesus, he declared that he would give half of everything he owned to the poor and pay back anyone he had cheated four times over. Jesus responded by declaring that salvation had come to that house, affirming that Zacchaeus too was a son of Abraham and worthy of God's grace. Jesus then closed with one of the great mission statements of the Gospels — that the Son of Man came to seek and to save those who are lost.

The Message

Jesus did not wait for Zacchaeus to clean up his life before extending grace to him — He pursued him first, called him by name, and chose to dwell with him, and that encounter with Jesus transformed Zacchaeus from the inside out. True salvation is always proven by a changed life — when Jesus truly enters our hearts, repentance and generosity naturally follow as evidence of the work He has done within us.
