John - the Baptist

John the Baptist was a prophet and forerunner of Jesus Christ, widely regarded as the last prophet of the Old Testament era. He was the son of the priest Zechariah and Elizabeth, a relative of Mary the mother of Jesus. John lived an ascetic life in the Judean wilderness, wearing clothing made of camel’s hair and eating locusts and wild honey. He burst onto the scene preaching a powerful message of repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins, urging people to prepare their hearts for the coming of the Messiah. Large crowds came to him from Jerusalem, Judea, and the surrounding regions; he baptized many in the Jordan River, including tax collectors and soldiers. When Jesus came to be baptized, John recognized Him as the Lamb of God and reluctantly baptized Him, after which the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus and God the Father declared His pleasure. John boldly confronted religious leaders (calling them a “brood of vipers”) and publicly rebuked King Herod Antipas for his immoral marriage, which eventually led to his arrest and execution. Jesus Himself praised John highly, saying that among those born of women, there had not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist. John’s ministry fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah as “the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord.’”
