Nicodemus

Nicodemus was a prominent Pharisee and a member of the Jewish ruling council, the Sanhedrin, making him a respected religious leader in first-century Judaism. He appears exclusively in the Gospel of John, where he first visits Jesus at night—likely to avoid scrutiny from his peers—and acknowledges Him as a teacher sent from God due to His miraculous signs (John 3:1-2). In this famous encounter, Jesus teaches Nicodemus about the necessity of being "born again" through spiritual rebirth to enter the Kingdom of God, leading to the well-known verse John 3:16 about God's love and salvation. Later, in John 7:50-52, Nicodemus cautiously defends Jesus before the Sanhedrin by urging them to hear Him out fairly according to the law, showing growing sympathy despite opposition from his colleagues. Finally, after Jesus' crucifixion, Nicodemus boldly assists Joseph of Arimathea in burying Jesus' body, bringing a large quantity of spices (about 75 pounds) to honor Him properly (John 19:38-42). This progression suggests Nicodemus moved from secretive curiosity to open commitment and respect for Jesus.
